All three county 11-man football teams lost in the second week of high school football action, but Pungo Christian advanced to 2-0 in the 8-man game thanks to tailback Quay Artis.
The junior tailback gained 145 yards and scored four touchdowns in the Raiders 48-0 rout at Mattamuskeet.
Other notable performances for PCA included sophomore quarterback Austin Gibbs, who ran for 153 yards on 10 carries and scored three touchdowns. Nose guard Josiah Murray led the defense with 8.5 tackles and recovered a fumble, linebacker Parker Byrd had 7.5 tackles and linebacker Wells Eagles had 5.5 tackles, 3.5 for a loss.
Northside 1-1: Senior Jamie Corprew led the Panthers ground attack with 125 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries in the 14-13 loss at North Duplin. Senior quarterback Hunter Chrismon was 5-8 for 109 yards before leaving the game with an injury, sophomore Malachi Moore had 120 all-purpose yards (rushing, receiving and kick returns0 and Landon Buck led the receivers with three catches for 34 yards. Junior Max Vansant led the defense with eight tackles, while senior Deshawn Smith added seven.
Southside 0-2: The Seahawks trailed 20-6 at halftime and couldn’t recover in a 28-6 loss at Washington County in Plymouth. Southside had four turnovers including three interceptions and a fumble. Ziyon Corey ran for 49 of the Seahawks 169 total yards on eight carries. Senior Tequon (Tater) Moore scored the only touchdown on a 31-yard reception. Moore led the defense with 12 solo tackles and also added an assist.
Washington 0-2: The Pack was shut out, 27-0, by D.H. Conley in the home opener. It was the home debut for new head coach Matt Taylor, who was an assistant at Conley since 2013. Quarterback Cam Whitley completed three passes to Josh Gordon (28), Jerai Davenport (25) and Gary Payne (14) for 67 yards, but also threw two interceptions. Davenport ran for a team-high 25 yards. Junior linebacker Gabe Davis led WHS with 10 tackles, including two for a loss. Marek Bates had six tackles and blocked an extra point attempt, Payne had six tackles, including one for a loss, Hunter Baldree had five stops, including one for a loss and recovered a fumble, while Jamel Cory collected a sack.
Northside is the only county team in action this week, as they are scheduled to host Martin Co. Wednesday at 7 p.m. weather permitting. Pungo Christian, Southside and Washington have a bye week.
