Michael Scott “Mike” Baker, age 77, a resident of Bath, NC died Tuesday September 5, 2023, at his home.
Mike was born in Tipton County, Indiana to the late Floyd Johnson Baker and Daurice Jeanne Purvis Baker. In 1963 a basketball scholarship brought him to East Carolina University where he graduated with a master’s degree in education. While there, he met Jane Ellen Bishop, and they were married on August 26, 1967. Mike was a coach, teacher, assistant principal, and principal in the Beaufort County School system and Powell Valley High School in Big Stone Gap, Va. He was an avid ECU fan, athlete, and sportsman. He and his wife enjoyed travelling many years together pulling their Airstream travel trailer across the country. He was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Bath.
Survivors include his wife Jane B. Baker of the home; a son, Michael Scott Baker, Jr., and wife Anneliese Westphal of Wilmington; daughter, Rachel Baker Layton, and husband Raymond of New Bern; daughter, Sara Baker Blake and husband Gerry of Raleigh; and five grandchildren: Sam Baker, Lance Blake, Owen Blake, Anna Layton, and Audrey Layton.
He is preceded in death by a sister, Lynne Ann Jacobs.
Mike was known for his friendly pats on the back and kind words. In his honor, please extend an act of kindness to someone. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 4217 Park Place Court, Glen Allen, VA 23060-9979.
