WASHINGTON 12 KINSTON 7: New Washington High School coach Matt Taylor earned his first head coaching victory, 12-7, at Kinston High School Friday night.
The Pack (1-2) scored both touchdowns in the first half. Gabe Davis scored the first offensive touchdown of the season on a two-yard run, the senior Jerai Davenport scored from five yards out for a 12-0 halftime lead. Kinston caused a turnover deep in Pack territory in the third quarter and scored to make it 12-7. The Vikings (2-2) drove to the WHS 1-yard line in the fourth quarter and to the 12 late in the game, but Pack defense held to earn the victory.
NORTHSIDE 49 BEAR GRASS 6: The Panthers (2-1) ran for 422 yards on 30 carries for an average of 14 yards per rush in the big win over the Bears (1-1) at Bing Mitchell Field. Northside took the lead early and never looked back as Malachi Moore gained 135 yards and scored twice on only six carries. Max Vansant ran for 98 yards and scored twice, while Jamie Corprew added 81 yards and a TD. Sincere Columbus and Faithful Fulcher also found the end zone to complete the scoring.
MARTIN COUNTY 24 SOUTHSIDE 6: The Seahawks were on the wrong side of history at Riverside High School as the Martin County team made up of South Creek and Riverside players won for the first time. Both of Martin County’s first half touchdowns came on the first play after a short Seahawk punt gave them good field position. Senior Tequon (Tater) Moore blocked both extra point attempts and scored Southside’s (0-3) only touchdown with a four-yard run in the third quarter. Southside could not overcome a pair of interceptions and two fumbles despite outgaining Martin Co. 269-207 in total yards.“Every time we made a good play, it seemed like we followed it up with a bad one,” coach Jeff Carrow said. “We must push through the adversity we’re facing now and keep working. There’s plenty of games left to get going in the right direction.
Community Christian 22 Pungo Christian Academy 14: The Raiders took their first 8-man loss in Wilson after a pair of wins to start the year. The Cyclones (2-2) scored a pair of first-quarter touchdowns and added another in the third quarter before the Raiders scored twice to set the final margin.
