WASHINGTON: The Pam Pack posted more points in their fourth game than they did in their first three combined in a 32-6 rout of Pamlico County at Choppy Wagner Stadium and the defense was responsible for most of them. Sophomore linebacker made two tackles in the Hurricane end zone for safeties for a not often seen 4-0 lead after the first quarter.

Sophomore Khalijal Waltower snuffed another Pamlico scoring threat with an interception in the endzone, which led to Keondrick Melton’s 11 yard-scoring run for a 10-0 halftime lead.

Landon Jones recovered a Hurricanes (0-4) fumble to begin the second half, which led to Jerai Davenport’s 21-yard touchdown run, then Hunter Baldree scored from 16 yards out after the Pack (2-2) recovered an on-side kick attempt.

Pamlico finally scored late in the third quarter, then Davenport capped the scoring with a 51-yard scamper. Jones recovered his second fumble and Waltower picked off his second pass to make sure the final margin wouldn’t change.

“I liked our physicality and toughness on defense, which led to those turnovers,” head coach Matt Taylor said. “We’ve been conservative on offense until tonight because we knew our defense would keep us in the game. I’m proud of the offense for scoring after the turnovers and this puts us in a good spot to start our conference season.

WHS hosts W. Craven Friday.

NORTHSIDE: The trip to Goldsboro didn’t turn out well for the Panthers as they fell, 13-0, at Rosewood HS. The Panthers usually potent rushing attack sputtered to 119 yards on 26 carries and fumbled twice. Northside (2-2) managed just three pass completions for 19 yards. Rosewood raised its record to 2-3. Northside is back Thursday against Martin County in a rescheduled game.

SOUTHSIDE:

The Seahawks are 0-4 after a 38-8 home loss to Gates County (3-2). Myquan Clark caught a 53-yard pass from Luke Bullock for Southside’s only score in the second quarter. Gates rolled up 339 rushing yards and didn’t attempt a pass, while holding Southside to 130 total yards.

“We kicked ourselves in the foot,” head coach Jeff Carrow said. “We still have to work on fundamentals and we could not find a rhythm. We had some injuries and some younger players stepped up and played well. I told the guys that it’ll be inch by inch, day by day, but we will get better. We just have to play together and focus on improving.”

Southside hosts Rosewood Friday.

PUNGO CHRISTIAN ACADEMY: The Raiders are 3-1 in 8-man action after a 48-28 home victory over Columbia HS (0-3). PCA wiped out an early 6-0 deficit with a 46-yard run from Quay Artis and a 27-yard run from McKinney Waters for a 12-6 advantage. Quarterback Austin Gibbs hit Evan Woolard in the left corner of the endzone for a 40-yard scoring pass as time expired in the first half.

“That play swung the momentum in our favor,” said coach Alex Sefton. “Waters and Parker Byrd returned interceptions for touchdowns in the second half and it was great to see our defense get consistent pressure on their quarterback.”

The Raiders host Lawrence Academy Friday.
