Daisy Quiroz spent her early childhood in Washington, moved to Ayden with her family and has returned for her senior year at Washington High School. She’s enjoying her final season on the court and looks forward to owning her own business, while improving her skills on the bass guitar.
- Why did your family move back to Washington for your last year in high school?
Daisy: They wanted me to get the most out of my last year playing volleyball and to be closer to other members of our family. Ayden-Grifton is really good in volleyball, but I didn’t play much last season and it’s more fun to be on the floor here with my teammates. My cousin, Elizabeth Mesa, is on the team as well and her mom, also my aunt, encouraged me to transfer. It’s been fun so far and our team is getting better.
- When did you start playing and why have you stayed with it?
Daisy: My parents encouraged me to play in our church rec league in Ayden when I was six. I love the adrenaline rush I get when I’m out on the court and you have to have energy and a positive mindset to be good. It’s always challenging and I’ve learned a lot about the game since I’ve come here. It’s my job as the setter to communicate well on the floor and make good sets so our front row can score points. My footwork is better and I’ve learned when I need to set the ball high or low depending on who is receiving it.
- What is your favorite class at WHS?
Daisy: Economics. I want to own my own nail salon someday soon and I know I need to make smart decisions. I didn’t know anything about Opportunity Cost until this fall and it’s basically about making decisions that will pay off. Nothing is free and you have to figure out the best move to make for your business. I thought it would be boring, but I’m interested in how our economy works and how business works.
- What musical instruments do you play?
Daisy: The violin and the bass guitar. My dad taught me the bass when I was 14 and I played in the band at our former church. I love music and sometimes I go out to our barn and just rock out. There’s some instrumentals I like to play and I’ve come up with a couple of my own.
My grandpa gave me his violin when I was in fifth grade and I’ve played in the school orchestra every year. He died two years ago and I feel like he’s still with me when I play. I get a spiritual feeling when I play music and I hope God enjoys what I hope is my gift to Him.
- What are your plans after graduation?
Daisy: I want to get my Cosmetology/Nail Tech certificate from Pitt Community College or Beaufort CCC then transfer to East Carolina to get my Business degree. I practice doing my friends and families nails and just earned my certification to do eyelashes, so I think I have a good head start.
