Panthers clinch title as area teams sweep

Northside is the Coastal Plains 1A Conference champion after a big victory at Pamlico County, Southside wrapped up second place and the Washington Pam Pack won its first conference game as the county teams emerged victorious on the road in the regular season’s final week. All three await the state tournament pairings that will be released Saturday afternoon.

Northside 41 Pamlico County 6: The Panthers wrapped up the Coastal Plains 1A Conference championship with a convincing 41-6 victory at Pamlico County. The Hurricanes (3-2, 3-7 would have claimed the title with a win, but the Panthers (5-0, 8-2) made sure that didn’t happen.

Northside led 13-0 after the first quarter before the ‘Canes scored their only touchdown for a 13-6 deficit early in the second quarter.

The Panthers proceed to reel off scoring drives of 55 and 82 yards on their next two possessions for a 27-6 halftime advantage.

The Panthers took the second half kickoff and marched 80 yards in over seven minutes to make it 34-6 and tacked on the final touchdown early in the fourth quarter.

Senior Jamie Corprew led the Panthers ground attack with 198 yards and four touchdowns on 18 carries, while Max Vansant gained 109 on 13 carries. Malachi Moore and Sincere Columbus scored the other touchdowns as Northside ran for 458 yards.

Washington 34 Ayden-Grifton 14: The Pam Pack overcame an early 7-0 deficit to claim their first Eastern Plains 2A Conference victory at Ayden-Grifton. WHS scored on the possession following the Chargers touchdown on Keondrick Melton’s four yard scoring run and his two-point conversion for an 8-7 lead they never lost. The Pack (1-5, 3-7) marched 80 yards that included a Cameron Whitley to Jamel Corey pass that covered over 50 of them to set up Josh Gordon’s four-yard run for a 15-7 second quarter advantage. Calek Smaw intercepted a pass and ran it back for a 70-yard scoring play, then Melton capped an 85-yard drive with a 15-yard scoring run for a 27-7 halftime lead. The Chargers (0-6, 3-7) scored early in the fourth quarter to make it 27-14. Hunter Baldree intercepted an AG pass that allowed Gordon to score the final touchdown from two yards out to set the final margin.

Southside 41 Jones 0: The Seahawks won their fourth straight contest and clinched second place in the Coastal Plains 1A Conference with a rout of winless Jones HS. Southside (4-1, 4-6) took an early lead and never looked back against the Trojans (0-5, 0-9) who scored just 22 points all season and allowed just under 50 points a game.
