The third time was the charm for Albemarle School as the Colts defeated Pungo Christian Academy in five sets on Saturday to claim the NCISAA 1A Volleyball title. PCA won the previous two state titles against the Colts at home before a road loss this season.
The Raiders came out on fire, winning the first two sets 25 – 20 and 25 – 23. The Colts roared back in the following sets, beating Pungo 25 – 12 and 25 – 17. The fifth set was back and forth, with Pungo holding an 8 – 7 advantage when TIC Player of the Year Sydney Abeyounis was up to serve for the Colts. The senior never let PCA get the serve back as the Colts scored eight consecutive points to claim the title.
Senior Autumn Gibbs had an outstanding performance for the Raiders with 19 kills in her final match. Fellow Senior Alden Taylor added 12 and Allison Sawyer had 13 kills while Anna Stoop had 42 assists. The Raiders finished their season at 14 – 8. Four seniors graduate from the teams: Gibbs, Taylor, Reagan Walker and Ginny Pugh. PCA does return eight juniors, including Stoop and Sawyer.
