The Southside Seahawks knocked off Coastal Plains Conference foe Lejeune, 2-1, Thursday night to advance to the third round of the 1A state soccer tournament.
The 11th seeded Seahawks (18-6) travel to Robbins, NC to meet number three North Moore (13-4-2) Monday night.
Southside split the regular season series with Lejeune and avenged the loss on the Devil Pups turf with Kenny Avila’s first half goal and the eventual game-winner from Jonatan Perez on a pass from Pedro Chavez-Pullman with eight minutes left to move on to the third round for the second time in program history.
“It was a really tight match and back and forth throughout,” coach Jay Petty said. “We had tremendous support from our fans for a road game and they really helped us. Our guys played great and we are excited to keep playing.”
Avila’s goal was his 101st, leaving him two goals away from breaking Jairo Juarez’ program record set in 2019.
Meanwhile, 16th seeded Washington gave top-seeded Clinton all they wanted in the 2A second round before falling 2-1 on the road. Edgar Quevedo gave the Pack (15-6) an early lead before the Dark Horses (21-2-1) tied it later in the first period. Senior captain Ivan Machado found the net on a free kick that would have tied the match in the second half, but the goal was disallowed because of offside.
“That was a very tough call and changed momentum tremendously,” coach Jim Kozuch said. “We controlled the match for the first 20 minutes, then had a couple of starters go out with injuries. We couldn’t hang on after that, but competed hard until the end. Clinton is a very good team and they have a great home environment. Our guys held the composure and the dominos just didn’t fall our way.”
