Mrs. Marlene Hodges Fancher, age 91, resident of Chocowinity, NC died Saturday, November 18, 2023, at her home with family by her side.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday November 22, 2023, at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory officiated by Pastor Ronnie Gurganus. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until the funeral hour at the funeral home. A private burial will take place later for the family. At other times, the family will receive visitors at her residence.
Mrs. Fancher was born in Beaufort County on October 24, 1932, daughter of the late Theodore Robert Hodges and the late Mary Virginia Hodges. She was a 1950 graduate of Chocowinity High School and continued her education at East Carolina Teacher’s College (ECU). On January 21, 1952, she married Carl “Bones” Fancher who preceded her in death on November 1, 1981. She worked at Singer Furniture Company in Chocowinity and was their shipping manager at the time of her retirement. Mrs. Fancher loved reading, bowling, softball, gardening, playing cards (especially canasta) and collecting seashells on the beach. What she loved most in her life was babysitting her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a member of Wayside Presbyterian Church in Chocowinity where she directed the choir. Most recently she attended Hodges Chapel Holiness Church as long as her health permitted.
Survivors include her daughters: Lynne F. Fisher of Chocowinity, Mareece “Recie” Clark of Chocowinity, and Carla and her husband Dallas Dickerson of Bath; a sister: DeVere Jefferson of Chocowinity; grandchildren Carlton “Lee” Gurley, Jr. of Chocowinity, Joni and her husband Steven Hildreth of Indian Trail, NC, Allen Fisher of Newburyport, Massachusetts, Amy and her husband Hardy Ray Corey, Jr. of Chocowinity and godchildren of Carla and Dallas – Justin R. Smith of Washington and Emily and her husband Jeffrey Elks of Washington; great grandchildren: Jessica Cartwright of Belhaven, Ashton and his wife Haylie Fisher of Windsor, CO, Carlee and her husband Justin Sauls of Wilson, Alison Fisher of Chocowinity, Emma Grace Maness of Indian Trail, NC, Hardy Ray Corey III “Trey” of Chocowinity, Shane Thomas Fisher of Washington, Hunter Scott Corey and Diana of Stokes, and great great grandchildren: Kane and Wyatt Foster of Belhaven, Waylon Sauls of Wilson, and Kieran an Indie Corey of Stokes.
The family would like to send special thanks to Wanda Chandler, Gentiva Hospice and other caregivers.
Honorary pall bearers will be Bill Jefferson, Jeff Jefferson, Harold Smith, Justin Smith and Chris McRoy.
Flowers are welcome and appreciated and the family asks for any memorial contributions to be made to Gentiva Hospice 222 West Stewart Parkway #100, Washington, NC.
