Senior wrestlers honored, Price wins 100th match

Thursday was a big night on the mat for the county teams as Washington and Northside recognized their seniors and Southside picked up a win over Tarboro.
Washington rolled past conference opponent Greene Central 68-12, North Lenoir 72-10 and West Carteret 40-32 to raise their record to 22-1. The Pack took just one of the first six matches against West Carteret, but consecutive wins from Bryant Smith (157), Tra”Quan Haywood (165), Trenton Baldree (175), Wyatt Campbell (190) and Cooper Johnson 215) put them even, before freshmen Sam Boltes (106) and Bryce Perry clinched the match with victories.
J.B. Norman (132), David B. Meza (138), Gabe Forman (144), Tate Tucker (150) and Smith (165) claimed wins on the mat against North Lenoir, while Perry (113), Christian Price (120), Braxton Woolard (126) Meza (138), Foreman (144), Tucker (150), Haywood (165), Baldree (175) and Johnson (215) prevailed against Greene Central.
Price became the second Pack senior (Bryant Smith) to earn his 100th career victory this season. The two, along with Haywood, Campbell, Woolard and Kenlaw, were recognized for their contribution to the program before the match.
“Those guys have been part of 107 team victories, three conference championships and six victories in the dual team state playoffs so far,” coach Chris Penhollow said. “They have been a huge part of our recent success and have been great examples for our freshmen and other first and second year wrestlers this season. I’m proud of what they’ve accomplished so far and look forward to coaching them the rest of the way.”
Northside defeated Tarboro, 72-12 and Southside, 47-30 after losing to Lejeune, 60-21, on their senior night Thursday.
Gavin Berry (106) and Austin Frazier (157) earned wins on the mat against Tarboro with the rest coming by forfeit. Frazier, Gus Vansant (175), Nick Jordan (285) and Jacob Robert won against LeJeune, while Berry and Frazier prevailed against Southside.
All of the Seahawks wins against Tarboro came by forfeit. Gavin Cutler (126), Latham Dixon (132) and Landon Beacham (285) won against Lejeune, while Kaden Miller (126), Jonathan Salas (190), Brian Salinas (215) and Beacham won on the mat against Northside.
