Darrell Browning Cayton, Sr., age 82, a resident of Aurora, NC, died Friday January 5, 2024, at Windsor House Assisted Living.
A funeral service was held at 11:00 AM Monday January 8, 2024 at Mary’s Chapel Christian Church and was officiated by Riley Green. Pallbearers included Ken Sadler, Sid Cayton, Milton Hollowell, Michael Starkie, Tom Walker and Gene Williamson.
Darrell graduated from Aurora High School in 1959. Darrell and Peggy were married on October 14th, 1961. He loved his family. He was a rock to his family and community.
Darrell worked for Texasgulf for 36 years. He played softball in the summer leagues in Aurora. He enjoyed hunting and was a founding member of the Walker Road Hunting Club and the East Carolina Hunting club. He served as the President of the Walker Road Hunting Club for 20 years. He was a diehard fan of UNC-CH. He was a member of Mary’s Chapel Church and served on the church board for many years. He served on the board of education for 4 years. Darrell served on the Credentials and Elections Committee for Tideland Electric Membership Corporation. He was a part of, and enjoyed, the Thomas Walker Coffee Club.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy W. Cayton of Aurora, a son, Judge Darrell B. Cayton, Jr. (Paula) of Washington, a daughter, Joyce Smith (Richard) of Aurora, a brother, Carl Cayton, Sr. (Annette) of Aurora, a sister-in-law, Debra Cayton of Aurora, a grandson, Evan Philbeck (Ciara) of Garner, a granddaughter, Tiffany Philbeck of Durham, a grandson, Douglas Cayton (Brittany) of Washington, a granddaughter, Brooke Hollister of Blounts Creek, 4 great grandchildren, Aliyah Jones, Trinity Hollister, Faith Moore, and Walker Cayton (arriving soon) and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Rowena Cayton, a brother, Reverend Dr. Robert Cayton, and a son-in-law, Raymond Philbeck.
A visitation was held from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Sunday January 7, 2024, at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory of Washington and other times at the home.
