The Washington High School wrestling team continued its dominant season with decisive victories over conference opponents this week, while Northside and Southside point toward the conference and regional tournaments.
WHS senior Braxton Woolard joined classmates Bryant Smith and Christian Price in the 100 career victory club with a pin over his North Pitt opponent in the last match Wednesday night. The Pack won 67-6 and dispatched of Farmville Central 75-3 in the earlier match.
“it’s rare when one guy a year makes it to 100, but to have three in the same season is almost unheard of,” coach Chris Penhollow said. “All three are great leaders for our younger guys and Christian and Braxton both started in the 106 lb. class as freshmen. As they grew, they had to work to get stronger going up against heavier opponents. Braxton’s opponent (from North Pitt) was ranked 10th in the state at 126 lb., but he was dialed in and beat him. He’s gotten a lot stronger and it’s paying off for him.”
Every match against North Pitt was contested and the Pack dropped only one. There were some forfeits against Farmville Central, but Washington again lost only one match.
Double winners on the mat included David B-Meza (138), Gabe Foreman (144), Trent Tucker (150), Smith (157) TraQuan Haywood (165) Cameron Johnson (215), Sam Boltes (106) and Bryce Perry (113).
Brennan Warren (132), Marek Bates (190) and Tr’reion Hyman (285) won once on the mat.
Northside defeated Eastern Wayne in Goldsboro earlier in the week, 51-29.
Austin Frazier (157), Christopher Alonso-Burgos (165), Gus Vansant (175) and Nick Jordan (215) won contested matches.
Southside lost to East Carteret and Pender on the road. Winners on the mat included Gavin Cutler (126), Latham Dixon (132), Mason Hodges (175), Jonathan Salas (215) against Pender and Brian Salinas (215) against East Carteret.
