After high school, I attended prep school because my grades were not very good. This is where I met Sandy Deeley. How we got there were two different stories.
Sandy and I first met at football practice in early August. Sandy had the prettiest blonde hair because he was life guard and a surfer in Ocean City, Maryland and still is today. I could tell Sandy didn’t belong there and neither did I, but we toughed it out. Running the mountains was not fun and cleaning up your room was something we were not used to.
Sandy Deeley was the toughest guy I played beside and that says a lot. He was as competitive as they come and wouldn’t back down from a challenge. We were recruited as quarterbacks but were not going to sit on the bench for no one! Sandy had a chip on his shoulder and I did too. We didn’t like school and both wanted to be with our friends. He wanted to be at the beach and I wanted to be at the river. So, Coach McFall put us at linebacker where we had never played before.
The team finished second in the tough prep league only losing to Woodberry Forest that year. Sandy went on to become a competitive surfer after college and his son, Sam went to college on a surfer’s scholarship.
You never know who you’ll meet in competitive environment. Look and find Bucky Hill, Mac Currin or Sandy Deeley and grow up be like them!
The best of times with the best of friends and in the best of places, Washington, N.C. The Original Washington!
