The Washington Waterfront Underground Railroad Museum will be featured on Rootle, the 24/7 kids channel produced by PBS Kids North Carolina. A crew from PBS Kids NC was in town on Saturday, Jan. 13, to speak with the director of the museum, Leesa Jones, about her educational outreach to children.
“My role as the producer of the segments, is to travel across the state to find educational opportunities for young learners and their families,” said Isabella Daniels-Conner, engagement producer for PBS Kids North Carolina. A colleague of mine, who had done a previous story on the museum, highly recommended I reach out to Leesa to learn more about her work with the kids. I was eager to find out more and felt our young learners would be too.”
The focus of this segment is to showcase Jones’ outreach, not only here in Washington but the entire state.
“When going to schools, or hosting special events, we encourage our young learners to think outside of the box, through communication, caring and sharing,” said Jones “We want them to be able to grasp the idea that your mind is such a wonderful place to learn how to think creatively. This will also help them to understand how the freedom seekers were able to take everyday objects such as clothing, quilts, and even sunflowers, and safely communicate with each other. Hopefully, this will encourage our young learners to start thinking about all of the wonderful things they can do when they share creatively and work together.”
The segment on the Washington Waterfront Underground Railroad will air in February. For more information about Rootle, go to https://www.pbsnc.org/watch/rootle-pbs-kids-livestream/.
