Michele Oros was named the Meritorious Award recipient at the 120th Annual Washington Beaufort County Chamber of Commerce Banquet on Jan. 25. The accolade was presented by Jack Dugan, Director of the Small Business Center at Beaufort County Community College.

Selected by the Chamber Board of Directors from a pool of esteemed nominees, Oros’ recognition is a testament to her impact on the region. Dugan, who has worked closely with Oros at the Small Business Center, delivered remarks underscoring her invaluable role in the community.

“She is indeed one of the most knowledgeable, helpful and resourceful people that I know,” said Dugan.

As the former Director of Grants and Development for Beaufort County Schools (BCS), Oros played a pivotal role in securing approximately $20 million in grant funding to benefit the county’s youth. Even in retirement, she has continued to make significant contributions as an independent contractor, consultant and volunteer, offering her expertise in funding applications for a diverse array of projects.

“She is a wise counselor and technical wizard in the complex world of grant writing,” remarked Dugan. “She has been a ‘behind the scenes hero’ for a long time.”

Drawing on her background as a former educator, Oros aims to teach the grant writing process while assisting her clients with seeking funds. Her work philosophy revolves around building the capacity of those she collaborates with, a phrase she often employs.

The Meritorious Award, according to Oros, represents the relationships and community built around projects she has worked on.

“It’s about the process of bringing people together who share a common vision or common desire,” said Oros. “It is such a wonderful feeling to be part of a community of interconnected people that are all trying to do good things in their own way.”

As a true community advocate, Oros emphasized that her work is a reflection of the expressed needs of the community, reinforcing her commitment to serving and uplifting those around her. The Meritorious Award stands as a testament to her impactful contributions and the positive ripple effect she has had on Beaufort County.
