Chocowinity Middle School boys basketball team opponents probably thought they had a shot at a conference championship after Javon Williams and Chaise Smith moved on to the Washington High School team.
That has not been the case as the Indians wrapped up their sixth straight Inner Banks Athletic Conference title with an 11-0 record and is 73-3 over their dominant run.
“It was more of a challenge this year because we only had one starter back from last year and only three total returning players,” Coach Alan Swain said. “It was pretty much a brand new team with an equal mix of seventh and eighth-graders who bought into what we were doing and worked really hard to win another championship. They were a good group to coach because they were eager to learn and also took care of business in the classroom. We had a lot of fun and I enjoyed coaching them.”
Eight-grader Jaylan Lee, former Southside girls standout Ka’Nayah O’Neal’s younger brother, led the Indians with 16.5 points a game.
