Standout Northside running back Jamie Corprew will get a chance to play college football for North Carolina Wesleyan in Rocky Mount in the fall.

Corprew was the Coastal Plains Conference Player of the Year after gaining 1,579 yards and scoring 24 touchdowns to lead the Panthers to their second straight undefeated conference season.

“His dad played here, so it was neat that he could continue the family tradition of having success,” coach Keith Boyd said. “He was our feature back and helped us to a successful season. He got quicker during his time here and that’s what helped him advance to the college level.”

Corprew averaged over 10 yards a carry in the Panthers run-heavy offense and said the Wesleyan coaches told him he fit best at the same position.

“They me I was bigger than some of the backs already there and that I would have a chance to play as a freshman,” Corprew said. “I know I have to continue to work hard in the weight room to be ready to compete. I really liked the campus because it’s small like Northside and calm and quiet. It’s the right atmosphere for me.”
Corprew said he also considered Methodist University in Fayetteville and Elizabeth City State.

The Battling Bishops play in the Division III USA South Conference Along with Greensboro College and Methodist as in-state opponents along with several schools in Virginia and West Virginia.

“He’ll be a good fit at H-back or as a straight running back,” Boyd said. “It’s a good thing anything you have a chance to keep playing.”
