Washington, NC – The community is invited to join the Shepard Cancer Center Development Council as Spotlight on Cancer is revealed to on Thursday, March 14 at 7 p.m. on the campus of ECU Health Beaufort Hospital.
Spotlight on Cancer is a spectacular illumination of the colors of cancer, on trees throughout the hospital and cancer center campus.

“This project is more than just a lighting of trees. Each month we will widely share the importance of screening and early detection with the community. We hope that when people see the lighted trees it will be a reminder to get those important cancer screenings, and remind those they love to do the same,” said Jack Piland, chair of the Shepard Cancer Center Development Council.

Cancer continues to be a leading cause of death in Beaufort and Hyde counties and the top ranked cancers both nationally and locally – breast, colon, lung and prostate – can be detected early with regular screenings.

“We know that early detection and early treatment of cancer can make a tremendous difference in someone’s life, as well as the lives of their loved ones,” added Dr. John Inzerillo, medical oncologist at the Shepard Cancer Center at ECU Health Beaufort Hospital.

The community is invited to attend this free event to see the spectacular reveal of lights. Heavy hors d’oeuvres will served.

The mission of the Shepard Cancer Center Development Council is to financially promote and support the Marian L. Shepard Cancer Center in its efforts to improve the mind, body, and spirit of cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers. In addition, the Development Council will support the cancer center in its efforts to promote prevention, early detection, and early treatment of cancer.
