Washington murder suspect arrested, one still at large

On Feb. 24, 2024 officers with the Washington Police Department responded to a report of a person shot near the intersection of E. 8th Street and Charlotte Street. Upon arrival officers located the victim, Eric Whitney Sr. suffering from a gunshot wound to his abdomen. Lifesaving measures had been started by a bystander and were taken over by Washington Fire/Rescue. The victim was transported to ECU Health Beaufort where he succumbed to his injuries.
As a result of this investigation arrest warrants and charges have been filed on two individuals, Darrien Demonday Oreand Demetrius Antonio Ward. Both Ore and Ward have been charged with one count each of First Degree Murder. Ward is in custody and is being held at the Beaufort County Detention Center under no bond. Darrien Ore is not in custody at this time. Again, there are active arrest warrants for Darrien Demonday Ore charging him with 1st Degree Murder.
