Northside senior Gavin Sawyer posted the second lowest score in program history with a one-under par 69 in Tuesday’s Coastal Plains Conference meet at Paradise Point in Jacksonville.
Sawyer led the Panthers to a 40 stroke victory over second place Lejeune (373), Southside (377) and Pamlico County (381).
The teams played the par 70 Scarlett course near LeJeune High School and Sawyer, playing the back nine first, made four birdies, including three in four holes on the way to a 32.
“It really helps your confidence when you get off to a hot start like he did,” coach Jared Adams said. “He had a great first nine holes after we made a couple of adjustments on the range during warmups and shot a fantastic round.”
Sawyer added another birdie on his second nine for a 37 that was the best score in over 20 years according to Adams.
“He’s conquered several goals this season and has learned to grind through some adversity,” Adams said. He broke 80 for the first time earlier, then wanted 70 and to be under par. He did both Tuesday, which will help him stay confident through our post-season.”
Teammate Wyatt Berry shot 83 to finish third overall. Claire Holmes (89) and Max Vansant completed the Panthers scoring.
Alex Silva led the Seahawks with an 89 to tie Holmes for fifth among individuals. Latham Dixon (91), Avery Dixon (97) and L.C. Jenkins (100) rounded out Southside’s scoring.
Freshman Sophie Berry led the Northside B team with an 86.
