The Duke Blue Devils went with an unusual format for Saturday’s spring football game at Wallace Wade Stadium and former Washington High School standout Terry Moore took full advantage.
The offense (Blue team) played the defense (White team) in two 15-minute quarters with traditional scoring for the offense, while the defense earned six points for a turnover, three points for a fourth-down stop, two points for a three-and-out and one point for a sack.
Moore, a 6’1 195 lb. junior, started at safety and helped the White team to a 21-16 victory.
The defense led 11-3 at halftime, thanks to a three-and-out and three stops on fourth down. They upped the advantage to 14-3, before the offense rallied with a field goal and a touchdown to make it 14-13.
The defense intercepted a pass for a 20-13 lead, then Moore deflected a pass, his second of the game, on the last drive to preserve the victory.
First year head coach Manny Diaz was unavailable for comment, but a Duke athletic official said Moore has played well during spring practice and will be an impact player in the fall.
He made the switch to defense last season and started the majority of the year at safety before injuring his ankle against North Carolina late in the season. He finished with 43 tackles, 21 solo, and 2.5 sacks. Moore also averaged 23.3 yards on 10 kickoff returns last fall.
Moore ran for 4,935 yards at WHS and led the Pack to three 2A state playoff appearances.
