The Washington girls soccer team scored two goals in overtime to advance in the 2A state tournament, while Southside went all the way to penalty kicks before pulling out a 4-3 victory to extend its season.

The #6 Pam Pack remained undefeated at 17-0-1, but not without a fight from #27 Research Triangle HS who ended the season 5-13.

“They are a Raleigh team, so we knew they would be good despite their record and our higher seed,” coach Kendall Cox said. “We just kept working and the shots finally fell. We’ve worked on following our shots all year in practice and it paid off for us. Our girls have tremendous effort and we’re proud to advance to the second round.”

Junior Avery Thomas put the Pack on top 1-0 with a goal from the right side with 2;53 left in the first half. The Raptors answered with the tying goal six minutes into the second half and the score stayed that way despite multiple opportunities for both sides.

North Carolina high school overtime soccer rules stipulate two 10 minute overtime periods even if a team scores in the first one.

Angelee Higuera Dominquez found the net for the eventual winning goal on a rebound after Sonti Small’s shot hit the post with 30 seconds left the first overtime.

Senior MaryPage Moore iced the win with a goal from the left side after she dribbled through several defenders with 4:33 left in the second overtime.

The Pam Pack host #11 North Carolina School of Science & Math (14-4), who defeated #22 Wallace-Rose Hill, 8-0, Thursday.

Meanwhile, Southside advanced to the second round of the 1A playoffs for the first time in program history with a 4-3 victory over Oxford Prep that was decided on Sophia Ziegler’s penalty kick.

Freshman Eliza Jones have the 13th-seeded Seahawks (12-7-3) a 1-0 halftime lead, before #20 Oxford Prep (5-12-1) tied it nine minutes into the second half.

The teams battled through 30 more minutes before Kimberly Perez, Joana Ramos and Ziegler’s penalty kicks gave Southside the victory.

“Getting to the second round is a huge accomplishment and I’m proud our seniors get to experience it,” coach Jay Petty said. “I’m also proud of our resilience and the way we kept working.”

The Seahawks travel to #4 Hobbton (18-2), who blasted Chatham Charter 12-0, for Thursday’s second round game.
