Hyde County, NC – Hyde County Schools is proud to announce the selection of Sabrina Lynn King-Bowen as the Teacher of the Year for the 2024-2025 academic year. With a decade of dedicated service to the students at Ocracoke School, Ms. King-Bowen exemplifies excellence in education and a steadfast commitment to student success.
Ms. King-Bowen’s journey in education began at Ocracoke School, where she has taught mathematics to both middle and high school students for the past ten years. Her first teaching assignment, however, was with 2nd graders at Ocracoke School. She fondly recalls her early teaching experiences with the legendary Ms. Flick in 5th grade, whose mentorship helped her develop strong classroom management skills, high expectations, and robust student support strategies.
Further honing her teaching craft, Ms. King-Bowen completed her student teaching at Spring Lake Elementary in Fayetteville, NC under the guidance of Ms. Christy Thomas, a phenomenal educator who significantly influenced her teaching philosophy.
From 2016 to 2021, Ms. King-Bowen expanded her impact district-wide as the Instructional Technology Facilitator. Collaborating with Mrs. Shelby Gibbs, she played a key role in leading the district through several significant initiatives, including the GoldenLeaf Grant (1:1 Initiative), the NCDPI Digital Learning Planning Grant, and the NCDPI Digital Learning Implementation Grant. Her expertise in instructional technology has been showcased at numerous prestigious conferences, including the NERESA Conference, The Friday Institute in Raleigh, Dare County’s Dare to Share Event, and NCTIES. She also contributed to the North Carolina Digital Leaders Coaching Network and completed the Computer Science Discoveries course at NC State through Code.org.
An advocate for continuous learning, Ms. King-Bowen is a long-time member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and regularly integrates their research into her teaching practice. She holds a degree in Elementary Education with a concentration in Social Studies and a Master’s Degree in Instructional Technology from East Carolina University.
Ms. King-Bowen’s dedication extends beyond the classroom. She has served as a Mentor teacher for many years, always striving to support her colleagues and foster a collaborative learning environment. Her unwavering commitment to doing whatever is needed to help students succeed is a testament to her passion and dedication to education.
