This past weekend, our community gathered for an inspiring and successful event: the AustinStrong Home Run Derby. The event, aimed at raising awareness and funds for former Washington High School baseball standout Austin Cherry in his battle against Osteosarcoma, highlighted the courage Austin has shown in facing this rare bone cancer.

The turnout was remarkable, with over 275 people in attendance and 71 participants stepping up to the plate. The atmosphere was electric as families, friends, and supporters filled the stands, united by a common cause and their support for Austin.

“It was a very well-organized event, thanks to our Diamond Club and everybody had a lot of fun,” Pam Pack baseball coach and athletic director Will Tyson said. “Austin was a huge part of our program before he graduated last year and we’re happy to do anything we can to help him, and his family defray some of his medical costs.”

The Home Run Derby was not just about the thrill of the sport; it was about fostering a sense of community and raising critical awareness about Osteosarcoma. Participants of all ages showcased their talents, and the community’s competitive spirit was evident as cheers and applause echoed throughout the event.

Support from local businesses and individual donors was overwhelming, with many stepping forward to contribute generously. These funds are crucial for providing support to the Cherry family during this challenging time.

A special thank you goes to everyone who attended, participated, and donated. Your support not only made this event possible but also helped spread much-needed awareness about Osteosarcoma. Events like these underscore the importance of community and the impact we can make when we unite for a cause.
