A trip to a Greenville Yard Gnomes baseball game makes for a great summertime activity for the whole family, especially those who enjoy ECU Pirate baseball.
The newest team in the Coastal Plain League, the Greenville Yard Gnomes plays at Guy Smith Stadium. With passionate fans, pre-game tailgates, the new “underground” which is set to imitate ECU’s “jungle,” chants, and even letting the crowd sing Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer” going into the top of the ninth, they are embracing the unique ECU baseball atmosphere.
This is the first season the Yard-Gnomes have been in Greenville, and they are drawing an average attendance of around 450-500 to each game.
For the kids, along the first base line they have an inflatable “Around the Horn” game where kids play as the catcher throwing runners out at first, second, and third. Between innings, games are played on the field for crowd interaction, some of which are meant for the kids to enjoy but they also have a few games just for the adults to play and have fun.
For adults attending the game, they offered $5 drinks which included eight different domestic beers. They also have concessions and merchandise available throughout the ballpark. Each night also comes with a theme for crowd interaction.
General Manager Micheal Villafana is excited for the community. “Greenville has been clamoring for a college summer team for a while and once ECU’s season ends there is not really another team in the area, so this was definitely a fit for Greenville,” Villafana said. “This team fits the city and gives both families and college students something fun to do during the summer.”
The Yard-Gnomes just began the second half of their season where their record is wiped clean, and they start fresh again. After a Sunday night win, they are now 1-0 going into this weekend.
They are at home all this weekend with games against the Peninsula Pilots on Friday, the Greensboro Yard Goats on Saturday, and the Morehead City Marlins on Sunday. Tickets cost either $10 to be in the bleachers along the first base line or $12 to be in the stands behind home plate.
