Senator Perry announces resignation

State Senator and Senate Majority Whip Jim Perry (R-Beaufort, Lenoir and Craven) announced his resignation on Tuesday, July 2 in a Facebook post on his official page.
“It has been a great honor to be a member of the North Carolina Senate and to serve the people of the East. I am incredibly thankful to have been chosen by them for this life experience,” he wrote.
Perry announced in December that he would not file for this year’s election, stating, “Our life situations can change in an instant, and I finally reached the conclusion that I would not be able to make the time commitment necessary to be an effective Senator if I served an additional term. Time is a precious commodity, and we are each only given a finite amount.”
Once the General Assembly’s short session has finished this week, Perry will continue to have limited “check in days” for the remainder of the year.
County Republican leadership in Beaufort, Craven and Lenoir Counties can nominate someone to replace Perry until the winner of this year’s election assumes office in January. Vacancies in the legislature are filled by the legislator’s party, per state law.
This November, fellow Republican Bob Brinson will be looking to take Perry’s seat. His Democratic opponent is Charles Dudley.
