Shirley “Ann” (Cherry) Greene, age 88, passed away peacefully among her family and loved ones on Friday, July 5, 2024.  She was born on July 3, 1936, in Washington, North Carolina to the late Amacey and Jessie (Jackson) Cherry.

She is survived by her children, Melody (Chris) Brown, of Bidwell, Ohio and Michael (Sara) Greene, of Jackson; grandchildren, Owen Greene, of Gallipolis, Brennen Greene, Jensen Greene, and Sadie Greene, all of Jackson, Tom (Tina) Brown, and Christopher (Ashley) Brown, all of Bidwell.  Also surviving are great grandchildren, Brantley Brown, Bowen Brown and Baker Brown, all of Bidwell; sister, Mildred Jackson, of New Bern, NC; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews in Ohio and North Carolina.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, James T. Greene; brother, Seth; and sisters, Hazel and Faye.

Ann belonged to several organizations throughout her life, which include the Senior Citizens for 15 years until her mobility decreased, and the Jackson County Heart Support Group, for 22 years.  She was a member of Victory and the Limerick Grange for 13 years, Jackson Homemakers Club, for 20 years, and she was honored as the 2011 Senior Citizens Apple Festival Queen.  She was a former Pack 48 Den Mother, former part of the JHS Band Boosters, and JHS Football Mothers Club.  She was a member of the Christ Church of Jackson, where she assisted with the nursery, Acolyte, and Vacation Bible School.

Ann was born on a tobacco farm, where she worked hard with her family from a young age.  In 1954, she graduated from Washington High School in North Carolina.  After school she worked at Carolina Bell Phone Company as a switchboard operator in Jacksonville, NC.  She also worked as a salesclerk for Stop-N-Go, Stiffler’s Dept Store, G.C. Murphy, and Carrington’s Dept Store.  She retired at 62 and self-started a private pay homecare service, where she provided care, cooking, cleaning, etc. for elderly customers.  She also scheduled others to help provide the same care for her clients.  She met her late husband, Jim while he was stationed at Camp Lejeune Marine Corps base in North Carolina, where she loved attending the Marine Corps Ball.

Her fondest childhood memories were growing up on a farm and harvesting and planting Tobacco and other crops and raising livestock.  As an adult, Ann worked and was a Homemaker, raising her children and making friends wherever she was.

She was a Cincinnati Bengals fan, rooting for Joe Burrow, and a major fan of anything North Carolina related.
