Former Northside standout, NBA All-Star, two-time Olympian and Miami Heat captain Bam Adebayo reportedly signed a three-year $166 million contract extension to stay with his original team, the Miami Heat.
The extension serves as an early birthday present of sorts for the 6’9, 255-pound center, who turns 27 July 18.
Adebayo moved from New Jersey to Pinetown with his mom and played basketball at Northeast Elementary and Northside High School before transferring his senior year.
He signed with Kentucky to play for John Calipari. He stayed one season with the Wildcats and made the SEC all-freshman team, all SEC second team, and SEC all-tournament team before declaring for the NBA draft where he was selected number 14 overall in 2017 by the Heat.
Since being drafted Adebayo has become a three-time NBA All-star and five-time All-defensive team selection. Adebayo also won gold at the Tokyo Olympics and is on the team to play in the Paris Olympics later this month.
Last season Adebayo averaged a double-double per game with 19.3 points and 10.4 rebounds. He also had 35.7 three-point percentage and a 52.1 field goal percentage.
He set career-highs in total rebounds, defensive rebounds, double-doubles, three-pointers made and three-point percentage, while leading the Heat in points, rebounds, steals, blocks and tallied over 100 assists for the seventh straight season.
Adebayo still has two years remaining on his current contract (five years, $163 million) before his new pact goes into effect.
