Garland Van Carter, 75, of Plymouth passed away on Sunday, July 21, 2024, at his home.
Van was born in Beaufort County on October 18, 1948, to the late Lee Thomas and Evelyn Spencer Carter. He was married to the former Kay Fulford, for over forty-nine years before she preceded him in death.
Van honorably served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam era. He went on to work as a rural letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for thirty-nine years, serving in the Roper, Plymouth, and Merry Hill areas. He was the past president of the NC Rural Carrier Association and a long-time board member of the South Atlantic Conference of the National Rural Letter Carrier Association. Van also served as past president of Friends of the Library and member of the Jaycees, Kiwanis, and Washington County American Red Cross Board. He was also a member of Perseverance Lodge 59 AF&AM.
A visitation will be held from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, at Bryan Funeral Service at Hampton Academy, Plymouth. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, at Hillside Memorial Gardens.
Van is survived by his daughter, Jennie Bowen, and husband Dennis of Plymouth; granddaughter, Jessalyn B. Cahoon (Ryan) of Fairfield, step-grandchildren, Daniel Bowen (Jessica) of Washington, and Jenna Bowen of Bakersville; great-grandson, Carter Cahoon and step-great grandsons, Ethan and Zachary Bowen; a sister, Sallie Carter of Swan Quarter, and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution may be made to the charity of your choice.
