Washington resident Scott Penhollow is starting a run club in Washington to help train for a Wilmington half-marathon in November. With different half-marathons, 5K’s, and 10K’s all over the eastern side of the state, he figured this would be a great opportunity to bring like-minded people together for the same goal.

“I retired from the army in 2015 when I started running, I thought this would be cool to invite other people to try,” Penhollow said. “I know there are other run clubs in the city, but I was looking for something more goal-oriented, it has a lot more of an accountability aspect when you are training for something.”

Penhollow is looking to start at Athletic Edge on Monday morning at 6:30 a.m. to beat the heat, and will train every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. Penhollow believes in train ups, meaning the training builds up as you go. This is supposed to make training easier for everyone, especially beginners.

“A lot of people like the idea of running marathons, but do not have the drive to do it,” Penhollow said. “I encourage people to take the first step, even if you come out and decide you are not ready for a marathon quite yet, I encourage people to keep training as this is still a first step so you can participate in the next one.”

Penhollow usually participates in two races a year and says he will participate no matter what but wanted to invite others to share the experience. The first day of training will start this Monday, July 29, in front of Athletic Edge and anyone is encouraged to participate regardless of experience level.
