Who says the remake never lives up to the original. Close to 100 area youth football players would disagree after a fun, instructive morning at the second Terry Moore Dream Big youth football camp Saturday at Kugler Field in Washington.
Moore, a former standout Pam Pack running back, took a break from pre-season workouts at Duke University to return where his football career started to hopefully inspire a new generation to put in the time to be successful.
“It means even more to me that we did it again, because now it can become an annual thing that kids look forward to,” Moore said. “We did it last year just to see if we could and this time it seems more real. I had some great times playing (in the Washington Youth Football League) on this field and it’s fun to come back and let the kids see that it’s possible to play college football or be successful at something else.”
Moore, former coaches, teammates and two current Blue Devil teammates divided the kids into age groups and rotated them through several stations that included agility drills, proper ball handling techniques, pass receiving, pass defense and a 40-yard dash race at the end. Each of the four race winners received a copy of the brand-new College Football 25 video game of which Moore is a part.
After the campers completed the football part of the morning, they had a lunch of hot dogs grilled by Terry Moore Sr., chips and drinks with frozen ice treats for dessert. The entire morning was free of charge and Moore wouldn’t have it any other way.
“I’ve never even thought of charging,” Moore said. “I know it’s a struggle for some of these families sometimes and so many people helped and encouraged me when I was their age, that there’s no way I could charge anybody. It feels good to be home and hopefully making an impact on these kids and hopefully, we’ll be able to do it every year. I talked my dad into cooking the hot dogs, so that was the big upgrade this year.”
P.S. Jones rising 8th-grader Zachery Brown was one of the 40-yard dash winners and completed his second camp. The 13-year-old defensive end-running back said it was fun and he learned something.
“It helped me get better at a bunch of things and it’s neat that he wants to give back to the community,” Brown said. “It will be fun to play the video game with him in it.”
Moore said he’s gained five pounds of muscle during the off-season and is up to 202 lbs. He’s comfortable with new coach Manny Diaz and the rest of the staff and is scheduled to start at free safety.
“I’m ready for pre-season camp to start because we didn’t get to hit during spring ball,” Moore said. “The new position coaches have helped me a lot with my football IQ and I’ve very comfortable with them. I’m learning what to anticipate from the offense in different down and distance situations and what plays to expect depending on the time left on the clock.”
The Blue Devils open August 30 at home against Elon at 7:30 p.m.
