As Southside High School prepares for the new volleyball season starting on Tuesday, they introduce a new head coach to help turn the program around. Southside Volleyball was 2-17 last season with both wins occurring in 3-0 sweeps against Washington County. They finished in last place in the Coastal Plains 1A/2A conference with an 0-11 conference record. Despite the troubles, they have a veteran group of volleyball players returning with only four seniors graduating from last season.
Head coach Misty Mooring is determined to help turn the program around with her efforts to try and get more people passionate about volleyball. Her experience as a volleyball player at Northside High School, being a coach at Chocowinity Middle School, and Southsides’ girls basketball coach, have helped prepare her to build the volleyball program.
“Chocowinity does not have a rec program, so it is up to us to get younger kids interested in volleyball,” Mooring said.
Part of her efforts to get younger players interested, she hosted a summer camp for kids to play volleyball with the high schoolers. She had also planned to host a volleyball jamboree at Southside on Saturday, but due to weather conditions, it was cancelled. Southside volleyball also had 12 voluntary summer workouts and offered one on one sessions for the players.
Coach Mooring is optimistic about her players and what they can accomplish. “We have talent on this team, we must turn the tides while also having fun,” Mooring said. “This team has a strong work ethic and holds each other accountable. We want a team that is tight, close-knit, family oriented, gets along and has fun together.”
Southside volleyball will open the season on Tuesday, August 13 at Greene Central. The home opener is a week later, also against the Rams.
