Douglas Allen “ Doug” Gibbs, 68, of Engelhard, died Monday, August 12, 2024.
Doug was born in Beaufort County on March 25, 1956, to the late Allen Forest and Dorothy Elizabeth Barber Gibbs. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Church of Christ.
He was a graduate of Mattamuskeet High School class of 1974, Beaufort Community College class of 1976, and a graduate of Mid Atlantic Christian College class of 1989.
During his working career, he worked as the assistant to the County Manager for the County of Hyde, and as a reporter for the Washington Daily News later he became an ordained minister serving several churches in the county and was part of the Hyde County Correctional Facility prison ministry.
Doug was a recipient of the NC Governor’s Distinguished Service Award and published a book named “A Few Minutes with God.” Despite his disability, he was a true servant of God, leading by example and spreading his word.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, August 15, 2024, at Pleasant Grove Church of Christ. A private committal will follow at the Oak Cemetery, Engelhard.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service and other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Gibbs
Surviving are two brothers, Michael F. Gibbs (Cynthia) of Engelhard, Todd B. Gibbs (Becky) of Rolesville, NC, and two sisters, Lori G. Shadoan (Rob) of Grimesland and Vicki J. Gibbs of Engelhard; two nieces; four nephews and his special friend and caregiver, Tammy Brooks.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Pleasant Grove Church of Christ 8320 North Lake Road, Fairfield, NC 27826.
