Beaufort County football fans will have to wait one more day for their first look at the local high school teams and they have Mother Nature to thank.
The annual Beaufort County Jamboree has been rescheduled for Thursday at Northside High School starting at 6 p.m.
“We were all set to play Wednesday as scheduled until that gulley washer hit us Monday afternoon,” Panthers coach Keith Boyd said. “Our field has taken a lot of water lately and it needs another day to dry out. It’s not supposed to rain any more between now and Thursday, so we should be good to go.”
Boyd said Washington County had to drop out of the scrimmage because of a scheduling conflict Thursday but thinks at least six of the eight teams will be ready to compete.
As of press time, Washington High School, Southside, North Pitt, Gates Co., Manteo and Pamlico Co. will join Northside at Bing Mitchell Field.
Four teams will split the field which each team running 10 offensive plays, then switching to defense. Each school will play four opponents for a total of 40 offensive and 40 defensive plays. No score will be kept on the scoreboard.
Barring a late schedule change the three Beaufort Co. schools will scrimmage against each other.
“We try to avoid scrimmaging against teams we play during the season, but sometimes it can’t be helped,” Boyd said. “It will be fun, and our kids will enjoy hitting somebody else for a change.”
Admission is $5 and the concession stand will be open.
All three county teams open Aug. 23rd as the Pam Pack hosts Croatan, while the Panthers travel to Camden Co. and Southside goes to North Duplin.
