As most of you know, after high school I transitioned to Randolph Macon Academy in Front Royal, Va. That was the best experience of my life. I say that with a smile on my face. I met many students that I won’t forget. One of whom lives here in Washington, and he bought his beautiful wife Mary with him, that is Mac Currin.
Mac lived in a four-man room down the hall from Bucky and me. His roommates were Tommy Tucker, Tim Turner and Willie Meyers. Mac was the tallest of the group at 6’ 5”and a natural basketball player.
We played together on the RMA basketball team. I can see him running and that natural blonde hair flowing as he ran. He wasn’t the tallest teammate of mine but was a giant beside Michael Kassouf, our team manager. He doesn’t have that blonde hair flowing anymore, Father Time has taken it away.
Mac swam too, that is why he bought the house with a built-in swimming pool at North Shores. He swims for his exercise. He was an excellent swimmer at RMA. He could swim faster than anybody at 6’5” feet tall.
He is avid fisherman! That is why he and Mary moved down to the Pamlico River from Raleigh. They wanted to downsize and be close to the river. He has a boat and goes out in the river and catches trout and any other fish that he can catch. He also travels to fish. He goes with his friends to the Alligator River where he fishes with Swanson Graves and Neil Partrick.
We don’t see Mac a lot and when Tranters Creek Herring Club opens in the fall, he and Mary will be the first ones invited. It’s a small world is it not? To think a classmate of mine lives two miles from me and who would have thought he would be raised in Henderson, NC and go to RMA and after college and 50 years go by lives here in Washington! He calls and checks on me often and we get together as often as we can, that’s Mac!
They were the best of times with the best of friends and in the best of places, Washington, N.C.! The Original Washington!
