The Northside Panthers opened summer practice with holes to fill as only three of the 11 offensive starters returned from last year’s Coastal Plains 1A/2A Conference championship team.

Veteran coach Keith Boyd has always said that a strong offensive line is the key to a successful season and there are several new players along the front this fall.

Junior Zi’mier Alexander (6’5, 250 lb.) takes over at tight end, while classmates Trexler Gray (5’11, 185) and sophomore Austin Alonso (6’0 190) are two new guards. Returnees include seniors Chris Alonso (5’10, 175) at center and senior tackles Nic Jordan (6’3 240) and Nick Edwards (6’1 195).

“We’re not as big as we’ve been upfront in previous years, but these guys move well,” Boyd said. “They competed well in the jamboree and have learned a lot since the beginning of summer. All of them were in our JV program, so they are comfortable with the way we play.”

Junior Chase Hewitt takes over at quarterback after playing a few varsity snaps his freshman and sophomore year when Hunter Chrismon was injured.

Fellow junior Sincere Columbus replaces conference Offensive Player of the Year Jamie Corprew as the fullback after gaining 363 yards and scoring seven touchdowns in a backup role last fall.

Senior Max Vansant returns after running for over 600 yards last year and finishing second among tacklers from his defensive back position.

“We’re in a good spot to start the season,” Boyd said. “The young guys will learn as they go and are good enough athletes to overcome some things. Our first goal, as always, is to win the conference and that hasn’t changed.”

The Panthers travel to Camden Co. Friday. With Jones Sr. not fielding a team this season, there are only four conference games. The Anchor Bowl is at home Oct. 18 against Southside.
