McCloud turns in top performance

The Northside Panthers were the only Beaufort County high school football team to earn a victory in the opening week of the season and senior Zanek McCloud was a big reason. He led a string of top individual performances in Week 1.
1. Zanek McCloud-Northside: The senior cornerback/receiver took a Chase Hewitt pass 67 yards for a touchdown in the Panthers 24-3 victory at Camden Co. Friday. He also returned a punt 40 yards for a touchdown, caught a 31-yard pass, intercepted a pass and recorded six total tackles including two solos.
2. Jarryn Payne-Washington: The 6’4 receiver accounted for the Pam Pack’s only score in a 21-6 home loss to Croatan. Payne made his football debut a memorable one by hauling in a 48-yard scoring pass with under two minutes left. He caught six passes for 111 yards on the night.
3. Evan Makepeace-Washington: The junior quarterback was 14-22 for 164 yards that included the scoring pass to Payne in his first varsity start. He also ran for 33 yards on seven carries to account for 197 of Washington’s 261 total yards.
Best of the rest: Northside: Malachi Moore ran nine times for 74 yards and made seven tackles, including two solo. Sincere Columbus scored a rushing touchdown and had seven tackles with three solo. Chase Hewitt completed 4-9 passes for 125 yards and a touchdown. Jack Dehoog intercepted a pass and recorded three solo tackles. Kenaz McCloud had six tackles with a pair of solo stops and Blake Wainwright kicked a 32-yard field goal.
Pungo Christian Academy: The Raiders lost, 36-14 at St. David’s School in Raleigh in an 8-man contest after leading 14-12 into the fourth quarter. Carr Eagles went 4-9 passing for 120 yards, scored a rushing touchdown and contributed five tackles on defense. Parker Byrd caught three passes for 112 yards and recorded 11 tackles, while McKinney Waters made 10 tackles.
Southside: The Seahawks fell 50-8 at North Duplin. MyQuan Clark scored the only touchdown on a 25-yard run, while Jarvis Campbell and MicKyle Sastre led the defense with 3.5 tackles.
Washington: Keondrick Melton ran for 61 yards on 10 carries. Calek Smaw had nine tackles that included a sack, while Ja’Tavion Ebron recorded eight tackles and a pair of sacks. Jahmiere Blackledge also had a sack and five total tackles.
Just ahead: Northside hosts North Duplin Thursday at 7 p.m. Southside welcomes Washington Co. Friday, while Washington goes to D.H. Conley. Pungo Christian is off.
