Pungo Christian Academy won at home, Northside lost on the road while Washington and Southside had Friday night off as county teams completed the third week of the high school football season.
Pungo: The Raiders are 2-1 after a 42-18 8-man victory over Mattamuskeet (1-1) Friday afternoon. PCA recovered the on-side kick on the opening kickoff and marched down the field for the first touchdown, a seven-yard run from quarterback Austin Gibbs. The surprise play knocked the Lakers back a little as Josiah Murray capped an 80-yard scoring drive with an 11-yard touchdown run, then scored from 23 yards out on the Raiders next possession for a 21-0 lead with five minutes left in the first half.
“I liked the way we started and how we executed our offense in the first half,” coach Alex Sefton said. “We let down a little and they didn’t give up, but we made enough plays to win.”
The Lakers scored on touchdown catches of 65 and 55 yards to make it 21-12 early in the second half, before the Raiders responded with a pair of scoring runs from Parker Byrd and one from Gibbs to put the game away.
“That’s how the single wing offense is supposed to look,” Sefton said. “Pound the ball on the ground to keep the clock moving and tire out the defense. We had guys step up to take advantage of opportunities to play and our defense came up with some big stops. We played well in all phases and I’m happy with the win.”
Northside: There were fewer happy faces in Williamston as Northside (1-2) fell, 52-0, to Martin Co. (2-1). The Gators returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown and never looked back on the way to their second victory. It was 26-0 after the first quarter, 38-0 at halftime and 52-0 after three quarters.
