Friday night, I went to one of my favorite class reunions for their 40th reunion. Being the head coach, assistant principal and athletic director, it afforded opportunities I could never pay back.
They had it all! It was held over at the Roanoke Country Club in Williamston, only a mile from the school they attended. The football team that they had in 1983 had been boycotted. We played that year with 12 players. We went to the State Fair after we had practiced at 5:00 a.m. and we ate at Parker’s BBQ on the way home.
That is not all we did. I had bought Olympic weights for the weight room, and everyone attended the UNC football camp that year. What we did was no small feat! We finished in the State Championship game in 1984, and it were one of the best teams I ever coached!
They treated Tracey and I like the King and Queen and took pictures every five minutes. I thank Greg Pearsall for calling me to remind me and inviting me. I was the only teacher and coach there.
I couldn’t do enough, and they finished 1-9 in 1983, but in 1984 we finished in the state championship game. Coaches if don’t have a winning season, take a look at what you’re doing. Either you’re coaching or letting it happen.
They were the best of times with the best of friends and in the best of places Washington, N.C. The Original Washington!
