A cyclist was injured on Saturday morning (Sept. 14) when a German Shepherd bit their leg as they traveled Idalia Road in Aurora, according to Beaufort County Communications Director, Brandon Tester.
The cyclist, a woman from Chocowinity, was at the rear of an 18-member group participating in a route designed for the Aurora Fish and Farm Festival. A dog chased after the cyclists when they approached the dog owner’s home. The owner was present at the time of the attack, Tester shared.
The rider was transported to ECU Health Beaufort for wounds on her lower leg.
Tester said the dog is being quarantined for ten days for observation and an investigation will be conducted.
The cyclist posted to Nextdoor on Monday writing, “I have put lots of miles on my bike with no incidence until Saturday. This attack was painful and scary.”
She continued to write that within the group there was an EMT, a nurse and a doctor. She “firmly believes” they saved her life, she wrote.
She advised fellow cyclists to carry an air horn and/or mace which could help stop dogs that are not fenced in and wildlife. In addition, she encouraged cyclists to have a wearable device that will send a request for assistance in case of an emergency. The woman had a Garmin watch that sent a message to her husband.
