Washington, Northside win big games, Southside falls

WASHINGTON, N.C. — Washington and Northside each picked up big conference victories on Friday while Southside dropped a non-conference contest during homecoming.

The Pam Pack won a battle of Eastern Plains Conference unbeatens at Farmville Central, picking up a 27-9 victory on the road. The win puts the Pam Pack (3-3, 2-0) atop the EPC standings. North Pitt is also unbeaten but did not play at SouthWest Edgecombe due to a school threat that postponed their game.

Northside, which also had homecoming, won in overtime against rival Pamlico County, 41-35, in the Coastal Plains Conference opener for both schools. The Panthers improved to 5-2, 1-0.

Southside (0-6) tied the game against American Leadership Academy-Johnston late in the first half but never got closer in a 36-6 loss.

Pungo Christian was off and will host Community Christian on Friday.

 

Washington 27, Farmville Central 9

FARMVILLE, N.C. — Washington scored first and never gave up the lead.

Running back Keondrick Melton scored from 3 yards out to give the Pam Pack a 7-0 lead after the conversion kick from Gabriel West with less than a minute left in the opening quarter.

The Jaguars answered with a 1-yard touchdown run by Cameron Sessoms. The conversion failed, keeping Washington on top, 7-6.

Washington’s Marek Bats recovered a fumble on Farmville’s 27-yard line on the Jaguars’ next offensive series. A few plays later, Pack quarterback Evan Makepeace hit Jarryn Payne for a 5-yard touchdown pass and a 14-6 lead which carried into halftime.

Washington extended its lead after the Jaguars punted on the opening series of the third quarter. Makepeace threw a 62-yard scoring pass to Payne to extend their lead to 20-6.

Farmville Central got a 37-yard field goal by Sam Flanagan to cut the deficit to 20-9 late in the third quarter before Washington answered in the last quarter.

The Pack got the ball back on downs on the Farmville Central 29. A few plays later, Makepeace rushed into the end zone from 4 yards out for a 27-9 lead after West’s conversion kick.

 

Northside 41, Pamlico County 35, OT

YEATESVILLE, N.C. — Sincere Columbus rushed for 156 yards and three touchdowns as the Panthers celebrated homecoming with a win.

Columbus’ touchdowns covered 8, 79 and 10 yards, the last which was the game-winning score.

Northside also got a scoring touchdown from Chase Hewitt, who found Zanek Mccloud for a 53-yard pass. Hewitt earlier scored a rushing touchdown from 3 yards out.

Trexler Gray led Northside with nine tackles on defense. Max Vansant, Zi’mier Alexander and Malachi Moore each had five tackles while McCloud also had four tackles, an assist, and an interception.

 

American Leadership Academy-Johnston 36, Southside 6

CHOCOWINITY, N.C. — Southside got a big shot in the arm with a touchdown near the end of the first half. Unfortunately, ALAJ scored less than a minute later, led 16-6 at halftime, and never allowed the Seahawks to score again.

ALAJ led 6-0 after a rushing touchdown early in the second quarter. The Seahawks were later unable to convert a fourth-down play, one of several in the game, but still got one last crack at scoring with 1:35 left in the first half.

Chance Haywood threw a short pass to Isiah Knight, who turned it into a long run before being tackled at the ALAJ 21. Two plays later, Haywood found MaQuan Clark in the end zone from 19 yards out for a touchdown to knot the game at 6-6.

ALAJ got the ball back and converted three pass plays that ended with an 11-yard touchdown as time expired in the first half for a 12-6 lead.

ALAJ got another passing touchdown with 2:03 left in the third for a 20-6 lead. The Patriots added two rushing touchdowns in the final 10:12 for the final score.

Southside finished with 216 yards rushing, led by TJ Minor, who had 117 yards on 21 carries. Haywood played the whole game at quarterback. JaVonn Clark led the Southside defense with four tackles.
