As construction of a roundabout in Beaufort County nears completion, drivers should expect some delays over the next couple of weeks.

At Douglas Crossroads, N.C. 32 and U.S. 264, the N.C. Department of Transportation contractor will pave the area, Oct. 2- 9. The following week, Oct. 9 – Oct. 16, crews will construct concrete islands.

To complete the work, the contractor will implement daily lane closures, stopping traffic in each direction for a period of time. Flaggers will stop traffic, and a pilot vehicle will direct vehicles safely through the work zone. Delays could last up to 30 minutes per stoppage.

NCDOT encourages drivers to avoid the area, if possible, or plan for delays. Alternate routes include Neck Road, Black Road and Harvey Road to access south of the intersection; or Braddy Road Mill Hole Road, Terrapin Track Road and Lizzard Slip Road to access north of the intersection.

The N.C. Department of Transportation is transforming the U.S. 264 and N.C. 32 intersection into a roundabout. The department builds roundabouts to improve safety and traffic flow. To watch a video and learn more about these types of intersections, visit this webpage.
