Betsy Ann Carney Toler, age 86, a resident of Washington, NC passed away at the home of her daughter on October 16, 2024, surrounded by her family. She was born in 1938 in Pitt County at Grimes Plantation, the former home of Bryan Grimes. She was the daughter of Dysie Arnold Carney Boyd and Albert Leon Carney.
Betsy was predeceased in 2019 by her husband of sixty years, Clifton Leo Toler, Jr., a sister, Yvonne Edwards, sister-in-law Brenda Toler Hill, and sister-in-law Monna Toler Cutler, and two nieces. She is survived by her daughter Elizabeth Toler Turnage and her husband Lee Turnage and a grandson Aubrey Hampton Turnage, who was the delight of her life.
She is also survived by sisters, Vera Jones of Maryland, Audrey Walker of Washington, Jessie Brooks of Washington, brother-in-law J.D. Edwards and brother-in-law Billy Hill and his wife Nancy, several nieces and nephews, great nieces, nephews, and great great nieces and nephews.
She graduated from Washington High School in 1956. She worked 10 years with the City of Washington and 20 years as Assistant Finance Director with the Mid-East Commission where she retired.
She was a member of First Christian Church of Washington where she sang in the choir for 50 years. She served as treasurer of the Christian Women’s Fellowship for several years and also served in other CWF leadership roles. Mrs. Toler devoted time to work with the youth of the church. She enjoyed cooking, reading, and bridge games, but her main joy was found in helping others.
The funeral service will be conducted 2:00 PM on Wednesday October 23, 2024 at First Christian Church where she was a member since age 25. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. Tommy Cox, Randy Walker, Doug Jolley, John Edwards, Neil Cutler, Daren Hill, Ryan Hill, and Zachary Paramore will serve as pallbearers. Visitation will be at First Christian Church from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM Wednesday October 23, 2024. Memorials may be given to First Christian Church, 307 East Third Street, Washington, NC 27889.
The family would like to extend a special thank you for the care given to Betsy by Keiana, Natalie and the rest of the staff at ECU Health Home Health and Hospice.
