The North Carolina Estuarium hosted ‘Estu-scare-ium, on Thursday, October 17. It was a fun-filled trick-or-treat style evening for the kids and their parents. Nearly 200 visitors played games like Walk the Plank, ring toss, and disk drop games like Plinko. They also decorated their own trick-or-treat bags and created their own monster paper craft. And, of course, there were plenty of treats on hand, along with food provided by Tucci’s Fired Up pizza truck.

In addition to the fun and games, a little education was also sprinkled in. Visitors learned all about alligators at the Discovery Cart and Zombie Crabs and parasite research conducted by April Blakeslee, Ph.D., at ECU’s Department of Biology. One of her students, Mic Schulte, was a big hit as he dressed up like a shark and took pictures with all the kids. “This was our first Estu-scare-ium since 2019,” said Katie McCullough, curator at the NC Estuarium. “We are hoping this will be the start of many more to come as well as more programs for the public to come and enjoy our museum. We would not have been able to have such a successful night without the help from all of our staff and volunteers.”

The museum will be decked out for Halloween through the end of the month.
