An unidentified person made threats against Representative Keith Kidwell (R-Beaufort) and Democratic candidates on Friday morning, the representative said.
“Earlier today, an individual made death threats at an early voting site against me and others working the polls,” said Kidwell.
At 9:55 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 1, an unidentified person approached Kidwell in the parking lot of the Board of Elections office in Washington and expressed their concerns on the education of children in state homes, Kidwell said. Kidwell replied saying he was unaware of any state homes in his district. The person continued to say children in state home are not receiving a good education. “Then he just started getting crazy, and saying, ‘well, you don’t care about the little people. I’m just going to shoot you,'” Kidwell shared with The Daily News.
Kidwell continued to explain that the person made the same threat multiple times to him and Democratic candidates. He could not tell if the person had a weapon. The person went inside and voted, Kidwell said.
“The matter has been reported to local law enforcement as well as General Assembly Police and they are investigating. Anyone threatening violence at election sites should be punished to the fullest extent of the law. I will continue to work the polls and meet with my constituents,” Kidwell said.
A spokesperson for Beaufort County Government said the incident occurred outside of the voting center’s 50-ft. buffer zone and was not witnessed by the Beaufort County Board of Elections. Operations at the polling site were not interrupted.
The Daily News has reached out to the police department and is waiting on answers. This is a developing story.
