The Beaufort County Arts Council (BCAC) will once again host the 60th Annual Alice Hubbard Stallings Juried Fine Arts Exhibition at the Turnage Theatre. The awards not only celebrate artistic excellence but also support and uplift artists in the community. There will be over $6,900 in cash prizes. Top honors will include $2,000 for Best of Show and the $1,000 Alice Hubbard Stalling Award of Excellence. This year’s 107 entries include 2D works in acrylics, oils, watercolors, and mixed media, along with 3D works including ceramics, jewelry, textiles, woodworking, metalwork, glass, and more. A special category for oils is dedicated to the legacy of beloved local artist Betty P. Crompton.“The artwork submitted this year is truly remarkable, reflecting not only skill but also the heart and spirit of our artists,” said Bronté Labbé, curators and engagement director for the Arts Council. “It’s a privilege to honor and uplift these voices, celebrating the creativity that enriches our community and connects us all.”
This year’s jurors bring a vast and unique blend of expertise and creativity. Acclaimed artists in painting and ceramics, Lynn and Mark Golitz, will share their insights on how they evaluated the artwork. They will be joined by Scott Eagle, associate professor, and painting and drawing area coordinator at East Carolina University (ECU). His internationally exhibited work has appeared in the Oxford American, The New York Times, and Wired Magazine. The fourth judge is Matthew J. Eagan, who also hails from ECU and is a professor of printmaking. He is best known for his extensive international exhibitions and his curatorial work in contemporary printmaking.
The kickoff for the exhibition will be held on Friday, November 8, 2024, with an opening reception, which begins at 5:30 pm, where the jurors will offer their critiques of the entries. The exhibition will open at 7:00 pm when guests will be able to get a close look at all of the entries, meet the artists, and have the opportunity to purchase original pieces. The show runs through December 27.
