Washington, Southside fall in first round of state football playoffs

Washington and Southside dropped their first-round state playoff football games on the road on Friday.
Southside, the Class 1-A East No. 24 seed, lost to No. 9 Warren County, 46-0. Class 2-A East No. 29 Washington tried to rally but fell at No. 4 Wallace-Rose Hill, 27-13.
Northside, the No. 5 seed in the Class 1-A playoffs, picked up a forfeit win over No. 28 East Columbus earlier in the week. The Panthers (8-3) will host Gates County next Friday at 7. The Red Barons (7-4), the No. 12 seed, held off No. 21 Washington County, 30-22.
The state playoffs continue each week through the state finals, slated for Dec. 20-21 at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh and Kenan Memorial Stadium in Chapel Hill. There are six rounds overall.
Warren County (9-2) scored three first-half touchdowns, two in the second quarter, to pull away for a 22-0 halftime lead. Joel Bryant rushed for two touchdowns and Graham Hosch added another in the second half.
Southside finished its season at 1-10.
Wallace-Rose Hill got two first-half touchdowns for a 14-0 halftime lead. The Pam Pack (4-7) matched the Bulldogs (8-3) in scoring in the second half but never got closer.
Irving Brown scored on a 3-yard run to push WRH to 20-0. Kendrick Melton scored on a 1-yard run with about three minutes left in the third, followed by a Gabriel West conversion kick, to cut it to 20-7.
The Pam Pack recovered a WRH fumble and scored with 11 minutes left on a 9-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Evan Makepeace to receiver Trenton Baldree to make it 20-13.
Jamarae Lamb’s 11-yard rushing touchdown with seven minutes left was the final scoring for the Bulldogs.
