Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a “tragic accident” that took place on Friday, Nov. 1. A 20-month-old child fell into a swimming pool and was found unresponsive.
At approximately 3 p.m., emergency personnel responded to a call that came from the 4400 block of Highway 92 East. First responders arrived and found the child’s mother performing CPR and immediately took over care. Efforts to save the child’s life continued, and the child was transported to ECU Health Beaufort in Washington. Measures to revive the child were unsuccessful, a spokesperson for BCSO said. “All evidence indicates this was a tragic accident,” they said.
Those who responded to the scene were: BCSO, NC Highway Patrol, Beaufort County Emergency Management, Bath Fire Department, Bunyan Fire Department and Beaufort County EMS.
The death is being investigated by Beaufort County DSS Child Protective Services and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in addition to the sheriff’s office. This is a standard protocol for all incidents involving child deaths.
“Beaufort County Sheriff Scott Hammonds and the staff of the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office extend their condolences and prayers to the family,” the spokesperson continued.
