Back in 1972 a U.S. Senator, who was his party’s nominee for president, was defeated resoundingly. Crushingly so.
You see, he dared to believe that our country’s involvement in the Vietnam debacle would lead to utter, complete disaster. Which, sadly, it did.
What was this man’s background? He was a proven courageous and highly decorated bomber pilot in World War II. A minister’s son.
Now, the tragedy of Vietnam, and the responsibility for our involvement, can’t be laid at the feet of just one political party and its leaders. There’s ample blame for many.
Those Americans who spoke out against the war were castigated, accused of being “pinkos” or outright communists. Such was that sad chapter in our country’s history.
FRIENDSHIPS – A good while ago I pledged myself to not let different political beliefs between myself and friends, especially those whom I have valued for many years, even back into childhood, diminish my friendship with them. To me, a true friendship transcends political differences and perspectives.
That same commitment I made to myself applies to religious matters also. Not always easy, of course.
Let me conclude this with something I heard or read a long time ago:
“ A true friend is someone who walks into a room when everyone else has walked out.”
Later . . .
APROPOS – May God continue to bless America. May we be so deserving.
