TERRA CEIA, N.C. — One of the biggest accomplishments a high school basketball player can achieve is scoring 1,000 career points.
Terra Ceia’s Lakin VanEssendelft did that a week ago, cracking the milestone in the first half for the Knights in their game against Northeast Academy. VanEssendelft is the only senior on a team that has an eighth grader, two freshmen and a sophomore. So that kind of leadership is valuable to the team and her teammates.
She spoke about the accomplishment, her team and the expectations for the Knights this season.
1. OK, so let’s start first off with the obvious, getting the 1,000th point. You need all those points you scored against Northeast (29 in an overtime loss), but obviously, that was pretty special for you.
Well, it means a lot, just being able to do that or being able to earn that. I know it’s like hard, but it definitely took a while
2. That was a tough loss, but tell me a little bit about that and what that has done as far as the season’s concerned because you’ve already played I think five games now.
I know it was a really rough game They definitely beat us up, like bruises and all that kind. But I guess it’s one of those games that you’ll learn from. It’s definitely a learning game. I learned from it.
3. You got a ball that marked the moment, pictures and things like that. I guess having the win would have been an added extra. When you reflect on it, when you reflect on what you’ve done, what was it like for you?
Well, it was a fun night, even though we got beat up. But I think, even though we lost the game, it still was a good moment.
4. Tell me about the season in general. We talked about the fact that you were the only senior on the club. You got a young team. It’s a small team so there’s not a lot of wiggle room. It seems like a lot of people are rallying around you and the other ones are kind of growing up real fast, too.
Yeah, I think it’s been a pretty good season. We’ve lost a few games, but they were 2A (sized schools), which we were expecting that. But we’ve definitely learned from those games, too.
5. Is there anything specifically that you see that you feel like you need to work on the most after assessing those games?
Definitely boxing out and rebounding That’s our main thing right now.
